Sony Playstation have announced that the replacement for the PSP 3000 will launch on 1st October 2009. The internal model name of PSP 4000 are accurate in the sense that it follows on from the PSP 2000 and PSP 3000, however, it will be known as the PSP Go Console.

At launch, the new PSP Go will be smaller and lighter than previous PSP consoles. It will have a 3.8 inch screen, which compares to the PSP 3000 screen size of 4.3 inch. Weight is almost half that of previous models and as such it makes the PSP Go a genuine lightweight portable console, just like the Nintendo DS.

The PSP Go has a slide out panel to house the gaming controls but it will not feature the much talked about second analogue control. Sony have removed the UMD drive in favour of a move towards this being a digital console for those who want genuine portability and the wish to download content such as games and movies. To facilitate this, the PSP Go will ship with 16GB of internal memory and Bluetooth, which in turn allows for wireless headset gaming.

The move towards downloads is believed to be extended to the forthcoming PS4 Console too.
